Joining server messages

Post by AJAX »

I noticed that the welcome message on the server gives the TS3 address and info... But we are all informed of this already and are already on TS. Can the messages be made to say things like keep banter to text during mission planning, or how to set up channel commander... step 1, 2, 3...

Thanks!

Also, FA is awesome. I can't tell you all how much I look forward to the sessions every Sunday. Thank you to all who make this happen.

Superb to know you're enjoying the sessions, comrade AJAX - it's always great to have you in them too. As regards the messages, instructions for how to set up CC may be very hard to cram into sidechat-style prompts, but we could remind people to head to the forums for instructions. How about:
  • Welcome to Folk ARPS - Please check folkarps.com/start for key info
  • Please do NOT connect with ACE, ACRE or beta
  • Please ensure you've configured TS3's Channel Commander feature (see forum)
  • Please keep banter to side-chat during slotting and briefing phases
  • For a socialist agrarian utopia!
Note: The URL listed above would auto-redirect to the ArmA 2: Need to Know sub-forum.

Thoughts? Also, I'm assuming we can have this many lines in the server config file; if not, we could drop to 2-3 messages, I'm sure.

But were are the goats?

Also maybe "Use key left of right shift to open chat, use up and down to change channel" I know it's basic but might be non obvious for people who just picked up MP ARMA or even more important "PRESS ESC BEFORE YOU ALT TAB TO AVOID FRIENDLY FIRE!" with a link to that waffly video...

Erm, you do know that only applies if you bind those action to those keys, right? By default, it's the , and . keys to change the channel and - to speak on it. And IIRC, that's already included in the server messages.

If you press the key to start typing, UP and DOWN change the channel by default.

The problem with any message that says "Press X to Jason" is that X is going to be different for everyone. For example my button to sit down is º. I bet most of you (Anvil and daf not included) don't have that key or even know what it is, let alone where. For an american keyboard it would be a '. Folk is an international community with people from many countries and many languages, which means many keyboards.

Press ESC/Open the menu before you alt-tab
Read the "Need to know" stickies
No talking in TS when slotting and briefing

oh and also
No taking the pilot slot unless macaco has already turned it down. :zoidberg:

AJAX has a point, especially because the servers need passwords, which usually means you know what's happening with FA before you join.

All of Fer's, daf's (if indeed default/hard-coded up/down keything) and macaco's suggestions sound great, except for perhaps "Please ensure you've configured TS3's Channel Commander feature (see forum)" which mostly applies to people who want to be FTL/SL, in which case they've likely come across talk about CC, or the forums, etc.

Any American who knows about º and it's keyboard key can have my pilot slot anytime (not that there are many, but still)! Call it cultural deference :)

People who rebind keys should know what they rebinded them too, the line would be aimed at the complete uninitiated in arma mp, however if there's limited lines it's probably not important/common enough to justify it's inclusion.

Problem is when you're the only one left and you need to jump on CC to actually get in touch with anyone who's left alive, that or get gracefully volunteered by the the host to take the honor of leading because nobody volunteered.

Which is why i described the chat key as "key left of right shift" instead of "-" key, while the symbols on non letter keys tends to change their position is more or less fixed.
